Online Course... Painting with an Iron... Extra savings for December...

Just a quick reminder to say that the 40% off offer ends tonight...

Thanks to those who have joined us so far...! Here is the link to the online course to get 40% off   THERE IS A BIG TAX UPDATE HOWEVER..... WHICH WILL BE EVEN MORE REASON TO ACT NOW IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT IT.... READ ON FOR EXPLANATION.... Something I have learned today, is the following... IF YOU LIVE IN THE EU, YOU WILL HAVE AN ADDITIONAL TAX ADDED TO YOUR PAYMENT..... This is NEW, and the first time it has been added to a sale of my courses, so I've spent the afternoon investigating why... It seems, in January 2015 a new tax was introduced on Digital Product sales in the EU.   There has been a phased introduction on management of this. Teachable (the platform I use to manage my courses) started rolling out their automated management in the Autumn.   They did an additional update across all users on 28th November...    (That'll teach me to hit delete too soon!) I was unaware of this when putting my newsletter and course pricing out, so it was a complete surprise to me when I saw a UK course sign up e-mail this morning, with the additional tax amount added...! If I understand correctly, the amount added varies depending on which country you live in.   In the UK, there is an additional 20% added to the course price... Nothing I can do about it.   (In todays example, and additional £11.64 was added.) During December, I will honour the prices that I put out in my newsletter. £58.20 with 40% off code £72.75 with 25% off code I will automatically refund any additional tax amount so that you get the course for the price you were promised. If you miss todays 40% off code, I will also do the same with the 25% off which runs until 31st December. As of January 2017, I will have to adjust my wording to say that there may be additional taxes depending on the Country you live in.  Will have to do some more research on that. So, if you've been thinking about learning some new encaustic wax skills from your own home... There will never be a better time to sign up than today...! Julie. x PS... Digital Product Taxes...   Couldn't think of anything better I'd like to be investigating on a Sunday afternoon....! ;DFacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinyoutubeinstagram

Herts Open Studios 2016… So far….

Wow… I can hardly believe, we are almost two weeks into Herts Open Studios already… On the one hand it’s flown by, on the other, it seems like a lifetime ago we were hanging the bunting up…

I’ve had over 50 visitors come through Studio 4, at The Stables Studios in Bourne End so far… and what an interesting mix…!

I have met a couple of the cutest toddlers I have seen in a long time, who even left me some lovely artwork of their own in my visitors book! Start ‘em young… that’s what I say!

I’ve chatted with some fabulous, and oh so interested ladies…. often accompanied by their hubby’s, who park themselves in the rocking chair, checking out the building structure on the promise of a pint down the road ‘just as soon as we are finished’…!!!

I’ve sold artwork, cards and plenty of wax supplies, and had a booking for an art talk, so has been very productive so far.

There has been a good response to my new online course too…. The internet is opening up so many new ways of reaching people, it’s a very exciting thing to be a part of.   I’ve discovered I enjoy creating digitally just as much as I do with a paintbrush or an iron!

There is a whole corner display of some of my ‘students’ encaustic work, which has created a lot of interest, seeing how they’ve learnt the techniques and made it their own.

At this point…   I must say “Thank You” to them, for being willing to show their work, (I won’t name names, they know who they are!)  For a couple, it’s their first time exhibiting… which is a big step!  So, officially want to thank them here, for being brave enough to share their work, and help encourage others.

Anyhow, it’s such a buzz with people visiting, seeing them go away inspired, and enthusiastic, or having learned something new is great.   It also helps me to put my work into perspective, it can be a lonely old time in an artists studio sometimes, so meeting people and receiving that feedback is awesome too.

Each time I do Open Studios, I meet another ‘new’ person, who has a contact here, or knows someone there, or has experience of….

I can’t wait to see who’s going to walk through the door next…

If you are interested in visiting, and haven’t got around to it yet, there is still time…

We are open for these remaining days…

  • Sat 17th & Sun 18th September - 2.30pm – 5.30pm
  • Weds 21st & Thurs 22nd September -  10am – 3pm
  • Sat 24th & Sun 25th September - 2.30pm - 5.30pm

After which, the bunting comes down and we call it a day on Herts Open Studios for another year…

I really hope you can find the time to drop in…

It's funny how things turn out sometimes...  it's been a bit quiet on social media around here, with a very good Arty Heaven reason why… Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 18.54.35   I am building a new website… It’s pretty clever… I’ve had a new site installed as a ‘Quick Start Kit’, and following on-line tutorials, which shows me step by step how to add pictures, fonts, videos, e-commerce, etc… There are a group of us working on our own sites, with a Facebook group for asking questions, and helping each other out… Although time consuming, it keeps the cost down considerably, and really helps with the thought process of what you’re setting up… I think, it’s pretty nifty… or at least I’m hoping it will be once it’s finished…!   (If you’re interested in the details, message me and I’ll be happy to share info.) I’ve said for a while that I would be updating my site, however, it has morphed into a little more than that… If you’ve read this far, I’m guessing you’re interested in the story… So I’ll give you a little background…. I’ve had people saying “I hear you’ve got a gallery?” and even had a couple of calls asking if people could put ‘Their Art’ in ‘My Gallery’… That is not what I am all about, it doesn't fit with my encaustic wax workshops, and sharing knowledge around the medium, so decided it might be time to tweak my name around… I tried every combination, of Julie Ann, Julie Ann’s Art, nothing was working, mostly the domains were already taken, which is pretty key!   I didn’t want to tie myself into Encaustic Beeswax Art, as I didn’t want to eliminate any flexibility in the future. Eventually, I settled upon JulieAnnArtist.com … and away I went reasonably happy with my choice…. Until I started testing out my updates on the newly installed website, where, as soon as I typed julieannart…. The web browser pointed to JulieAnnArt.com; a lady who appears very well established, with a super glossy website. I realized I didn’t want to be sending my people to her site, and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be happy with the confusion at her end either…. So, I was kind of stuck… Unsure which way to go next… So, I sat… And I pondered…. Then, out of the blue… ‘Arty Heaven’ came into my head…     I’ve always joked and said I’m in ‘Arty Heaven’ when I’m creating up in my studio, I leave all of my troubles at the door, and find it a little oasis…. ‘Arty Heaven’ totally fits with the sumptuous, fluidity of painting with encaustic wax and gives me enough flexibility to do other things in the future. (and between you and me, works with my ultimate dream of having a full on art retreat centre one day!) Poo Poo-ing the idea that it would be available, I double-checked anyway… There are lots of #artyheaven hashtags in use, but to my amazement, ArtyHeaven.com / co.uk were both available, and not only that… practically every other social media name was too... INCLUDING an online school, which I've been wanting to get set up for AGES!! I double checked my sanity, and googled how to spell Heaven, incase I’d had a mad moment and spelt it wrong… (I’m having more and more of those these days!) I ran it by Nicky, who helps me out, she too couldn’t believe it was available, and also asked if I’d spelt it correctly…! So... We agreed it HAD to be the right way to go…. I am now the proud owner of a stash of Arty Heaven social media sites, a variety of domain names, and an online school... Yikes! The new website wording is mostly sorted, and I've uploaded quite a few wax tutorials… but I’m currently enjoying a great step-by-step tutorial on branding (which came with the website package), which is a whole project in itself. There are lots of hours going into this, being worked in around keeping the house running, children organized, etc… (plus we’ve just started digging the footings for a house extension, but that’s another story!) However...   I’m determined to come out on the other side as soon as possible…! My existing website will continue to run… But, you can check out my new ‘Arty Heaven’ site here, and sign up for the newsletter to be the first to hear when it’s live! Otherwise, you can continue to contact me through my existing channels, or feel free to send any e-mails of encouragement at Julie@artyheaven.com   I need every bit I can get! 😉 Everything else continues as is… Still doing my two ‘Open Days’ every month, next ones are Weds 3rd & Sat 20th August 10am – 3pm… Then I will be taking part in ‘Herts Open Studios’ again in September, amongst a few other upcoming events too. Hope you’ll join me somewhere along the ride…!  Facebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinyoutubeinstagram

Living Crafts 2016

Living Crafts 2016

My first time at Living Crafts last Friday, the largest craft fair in Europe apparently, "promoting the very best of British Crafts"…    The weather was fabulous, and I was lucky enough to be selected to have a spot in the Herts Visual Arts tent, where six of us helped to promote Herts Open Studios, and the HVA as a whole, whilst demonstrating our own crafts.

I arrived, with a car FULL of stuff, you're never sure how much to take, should I take this….  that….  the kitchen sink….?!    Every time you do another of these fairs, you refine your display techniques, pick up ideas from others on what works well, and what doesn't…. One thing to be sure is every event throws up a different scenario for you, and no event set up is ever the same.

Julie Ann Poster

We received the exhibition instructions from our HVA nominee, and I noted I would have a six foot table to work and display on.   I estimated how much equipment I could display, whilst demonstrating my wax art within that six foot space….  I mocked up how it would look at the studio, and was pretty happy with my arrangement…  Packed up on the assumption that I'd find a spot for the rest of my clobber 'somewhere'   I've always been brought up on the belief that it's better to have too much, than not enough!

On arrival, my six foot table was much narrower than I had anticipated, so there went my first set of plans out of the window!   Anyhow, always ready to improvise, we pulled it together, everyone helping each other out, and got a pretty impressive looking tent together between the six of us… We had two different styles of glass makers, a fine artist, acrylic abstract artist, multimedia artist and moi with my wax painting representing Hertfordshire artists that day!

You're never quite ready when that first person walks through the door, and last Friday was no exception… I went to plug my iron into the power supply, only to find, my UK plug would not fit into the round socket I had arranged my entire display around…  Sh!!t…. Was my first impression… this could be a disaster!!!!!

Luckily, a very understanding lady said it wasn’t a problem, whilst I scuttled off to find a Living Crafts representative a bit sharpish…!   I found a lady with a bright yellow tee shirt almost instantly, who said she'd find the electrician, and send him to sort it out…. Feeling nervous, I went back to my tent… What a start….!!

Happily, most other people were oblivious to my little hiccup, and having just started on a well needed coffee, the electrician turned up, smiling with the correct extension cable in his hand… cracking jokes, and being generally cool… Thanks Living Crafts, ten out of ten on problem resolving front!

Phew... A working power supply!

Phew... A working power supply!

Right then, on with the task of showing people what these small blocks of wax, and an iron do….!   The morning brought a steady trickle of people around, many of whom were suitably impressed with their demos, and interested in finding out more, promises of visiting on my studio open days, or interested in workshops, or prosecco nights…   The afternoon was much busier, and I regularly had a group of people around the already cramped table, feeling a bit like a pint in a half pint pot at times…!

Living Crafts 2016, demonstrating in the HVA tent

Living Crafts 2016, demonstrating in the HVA tent

It was a great experience to share this medium with other like minded crafters, it is such an unusual, tactile medium, and visually captivating, many were instantly hooked into finding out more.

Would I do it again…?   I would love to do it again!   Ideally, if you could do two days back to back, it would help to make it less onerous, there is so much packing up and unpacking for one day, but I understand that it must be fair to the other HVA members who might like to demonstrate there too.

My observations were that there were more sales of bags, mugs, and equipment, (which I had), rather than the actual artwork… In fact, I didn't sell any artwork at all.     However, I suspect much of the audience there are already crafty, and more interested in finding ideas and inspiration, rather than there to buy art, but I may be wrong.   I didn't get the chance to go around the whole fair, I was too busy, but would love to hear how you got on if you were exhibiting there….

Living Crafts 2016

Big thanks go to Herts Visual Arts for allowing us to demonstrate at such a great event, and providing us with the opportunity to be there.   I doubt I would have instigated that on my own directly at this current stage, so it's a great stepping stone to potentially renting a booth, and exhibiting for the full four days another year.

If you are interested in having a go at wax art yourself, you can check out my blog post, making getting started with wax more affordable here.

Come to my studio open day on Saturday 14th May 10am – 3pm, The Stables Studios, Studio 4, Pouchen End Lane, Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, HP1 2RJ.

You can see more examples of my work on Artfinder, but hope you can make it to the studio, the true vibrancy of the colours are so hard to get across via an electronic screen.

Happy creating…

Applying wax with an Encaustic Iron

Applying wax with an Encaustic Iron

May 2016 update…. I'm excited to tell you about a new wax offer I've pulled together… The situation I keep seeing, are people really fancy a go at encaustic wax, but by the time they've bought an iron £30… plus the starter kit £38…. That's not far shy of £70, and they are still not sure how to use the stuff!?   Unless they are convinced they want to use it, and happy to make the investment, I see a lot of people get put off at the initial outlay, and put it back…

Perplexed by this, and knowing how much people WILL enjoy it…   It IS pure THERAPY!!     I've pulled together a smaller bonus pack of waxes and papers, which costs just £15.   This includes eight waxes, 20 x A5 papers, and 30 x A6 papers…. More than enough to get a beginner started, and easy to top up on supplies inexpensively when you're running low…

It's far more economical than buying papers and waxes individually, yet not as daunting as getting the full starter pack in one go.    So, for as little as £45 you are up and running.

My intention is to make getting started much more affordable, and most importantly, just get people getting creative with wax.    (This 'Bonus Pack' will very soon, come with a 'Julie Ann's user guide' to give you some step by step hints and tips to start you off, and, a link to 'Getting Started with Encaustic Wax' video for free too, but that’s not quite ready yet!)

I asked a question in a forum last month about how people use encaustic wax…  and was interested to hear how people use it so differently, some completely intuitively with no idea what they are going to create, others used it in a spiritual way, another lady used it with her clients in a healing practice.    I haven't particularly used it in these ways, but I can totally see why it is such a good medium for that, I've always said it's pure therapy…

So, at £45 to get started, it falls nicely into a 'gift' category, keep in mind for birthdays, and Christmas!   (Don’t forget Julie Ann Gift Vouchers, which can be used for wax, workshops and art too…)

If you would like a starter pack, or gift vouchers... just e-mail me at: julie@julieannsgallery.co.uk and we can sort details from there.

So… What else is coming up in May…?

Open Days and Exhibitions

Wednesday 4th May 10am – 3pm    -    Studio Open Day – Drop in, book workshops, buy supplies, bonus packs, or just find out more.   (You can check out my new tote bags, mugs and notebooks… They are fun!! 😉

Friday 6th May 10am – 5pm    -    Demonstrating at 'Living Crafts' at Hatfield House in the Herts Visual Arts Tent… So excited about this, it is the largest craft fair in Europe, it sounds AMAZING, check the website out and let me know if you're likely to be there too!

Thursday 12th May 7.30pm – 9pm     -     Talk and demonstration at Little Gaddesden Art Club – Non members £3

Saturday 14th May  10am – 3pm    -   Studio Open Day

Friday 27th – Monday 30th May  -    Mentmore Art Exhibition. This was an amazing exhibition last year, I met so many awesome people, loads of artwork and amazing lunches, raising funds for Rennie Grove Hospice this year, well worth a visit.

I hope to see you at an event, or a workshop very soon!

Best Wishes,

Julie.

If you ever visited my art studio, you may recall the way my studio was split into two, centrally down the middle.  During workshops, I often joked about not quite having enough space..... tongue in cheek saying.... if I edged that studio divider back, just half an inch per day, would my studio mate ever notice...?

Be careful what you wish for....

Just over three years ago I took the step to rent my studio... it was a big scary move, and I had no idea if I was doing the right thing... The past three weeks have seen another big scary move, my studio mate moved out quite suddenly at the end of January, and I was left looking at the prospect of sharing with somebody new, or perhaps, just perhaps, taking on the whole space.... Some fair amount of number crunching, and deep deep thinking later... I have taken the decision to take the whole space on...! I saw a quote at the start of the year that said.... "If your goals don't scare the life out of you, then they aren't big enough..."   Well, the studio is one of my smaller goals, so watch this space for the rest of the year!
Art Studio

Squished up Art Studio before

Art Studio After

Spacious Art Studio after

I've gone past the scared now, I am excited...!    I have had projects I've wanted to do for a long time, but in my previous set up, they often didn't work. I've struggled to photograph my work properly since I took the studio on... I now have the SPACE to set up my daylight bulbs, photograph my work, and style it to get a sense of proportion. (Okay, more work to do there, but it's a great start!)    This means I can FINALLY upload my work onto Artfinder, which I am currently getting through the backlog and adding more work to daily! IMG_9615 IMG_9613 IMG_9619 IMG_9618   IMG_9616 I've always been mindful of inviting people into my workspace on a regular basis... I can now have two OPEN DAYS per month, starting in March... Regular days where you can pop in, have a browse, buy cards, wax supplies, artwork, gifts, talk through workshop options, be generally nosey about what's going on, etc. EVERY FIRST WEDNESDAY 10am - 3pm EVERY THIRD SATURDAY 10am - 3pm This month, I am already booked for a Buckingham Beekeeping Event.   So... February's Open Day will be Wednesday 24th Feb.  10am - 3pm. My Open Days for the rest of the year are.... March:  Wednesday 2nd & Saturday 19th April: Wednesday 6rd & Saturday 16th May: Wednesday 4th & Saturday 14th June: Wednesday 1st & Saturday 18th July: Wednesday 6th & Saturday 16th August: Wednesday 3rd & Saturday 20th September: Wednesday 7th & Saturday 17th October: Wednesday 5th & Saturday 15th November: Wednesday 2nd & Saturday 19th December: Wednesday 7th & Saturday 17th To get reminders on your news feed, follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I have a snazzy coffee machine now, so you might even get a cuppa too...! My address is The Stables Studios, Studio 4, Pouchen End Lane, Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, HP1 2SA.  If you can't find it, give me a call, 07976 700737. I will be updating new workshop dates and prosecco nights very soon.   Let me know if you have been wanting to join us, but can only do certain days, I will try and take those into account. One group of ladies recently booked a joint birthday celebration prosecco night... I supplied the equipment, drinks and nibbles.  They had a go at encaustic wax with the iron for a couple of hours and thoroughly enjoyed it.   (I think they hit the pub after!!)  They brought a cake, with candles, and we all sang 'Happy Birthday'...!    It was great fun, and something different to do for a celebration, which worked really well.   Contact me if you would like to arrange something similar. There's plenty more in the pipeline too.... 🙂 I really hope to see you soon! Best Wishes, Julie Ann.Facebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinyoutubeinstagram

Hello All, A few people have asked me about booking workshops, or buying gifts prior to Christmas.   I have tried to summarise all the information you may need here! Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 08.41.17

Tailored workshops and gifts

In addition to normal workshop options, and prosecco nights, it is possible to tailor your own session, for yourself, or someone else.    Or buy gift vouchers, and let them decide…     Choose one of the following four options…

1)  If you want to just try encaustic, with tuition, with the iron, or stylus, without committing to a full course, you can do a 2.5 hour introduction.   £35 if you have your own materials, or £45 using mine.   We will work on step by step projects.  Session can coincide with regular workshops – If you would prefer 1-1 tuition, add an additional £10 and request when booking.

2)  Make a day of it!   We can sandwich two sessions back to back, allowing a break for lunch.   Perhaps one session with an overview of the iron and the other with an overview of the stylus for example, or use the full day on one piece of equipment.  £70 with your own materials, or £90 with all materials and equipment provided. Session can coincide with regular workshops – If you would prefer 1-1 tuition, add an additional £20 and request when booking.

3)  Or, to keep costs in nice round numbers… If booking two or more people together onto a stylus or iron workshop, 3.5 hour session for £50 with your own materials, or a 3 hour session for £50 if using my materials.

See examples of what the vouchers look like below, they will be tailored to you, with an additional page including what to bring, how to get here etc...

Screen Shot 2015-12-19 at 10.37.38    Screen Shot 2015-12-19 at 10.38.42

If two or more friends or family book together, and don't wish to share the session with others, I am happy to do that. It's nice to have that special time!

4)  Finally, know they love encaustic art, but no idea what they would like…?   Buy generic gift vouchers, which can be used to purchase original artwork, encaustic workshops, or encaustic supplies.   Vouchers come in £100, £50, £20, £10 and £5 options.

IMG_9376
